Meet the Latigo family - Rachel, Jared and their three kids. They sold more than half the stuff they owned, as well as their house, and converted a metal building into a much smaller home on Rachel's parents land. Building the house themselves made it possible to design it specifically to their needs.
In this interview, Jared and Rachel talk about getting debt free and show us around their house, where a lot of their rooms have custom build items. They also share about how much happier and stress free they have become since downsizing their life. Getting out of debt made it possible for Rachel to quit her job and become a stay at home mom, and she's able to homeschooling the kids and they are all able to spend much more time together as a family :)

I like the idea, like your family and your house. You have built beautiful house. Being debt free l think is one of the best things in your life. Once you have done that and have learnt how to keep that you will be able to add some other changes in your life. The only thing l have noticed that you still have got too much stuff in the house, too many toys even for three kids. Probably you might need to work on that, cause living in a smaller house with too much stuff isn't gonna make your life easier, you will have to find new places to store that all. I would let go half of the toys and place their clothes into drawers instead of hanging them.
That's awesome..my guy and I are wanting the same thing. I dont remember hearing ball park price it was to build your home. This may be the best plan for us as we do not have any children at home. So a 2 room house on some land with a storage or garage is great.. Our debt is much lower than yours. We are on our 2nd phase of life.. Almost seniors...lol.. And want to retire early..
People are so upset that your parents had land to give. We need to be closer with our families instead of thinking we need to do everything on own own from the time we turn 18. Society has the most backwards priorities. And I see nothing wrong with everyone sleeping together for this phase of life. I’m proud of what you have built together.
This gives me so much hope! I need a home for me and my son so I've decided to build it myself. It's just over a 1000sqft and I can't wait to get started I'm working my way out of debt and just starting to get things together to make this dream a reality. Thank you so much for sharing!
This video made me grateful for having the comfort of living in a 2000 sqft townhome which I had always taken for granted and had complaints about being too small. I was always hoping to move to a bigger home. That thought has completely changed now, and makes me want to call out all those 4-5 member nuclear families living in big mansions consuming and wasting so many precious resources.
Why didnt yall make it 3 bedroom? Your kids will get older. The boys cant be with the girl when they get older. A
They wont want to sleep in your room either. Also not saying yall need alone time but that's gotta be awkward with kids sleeping in your room all the time.
I stopped watching at the “we are a homeschooling family”.
There’s a reason we have a team of experts (ie, teachers at a school) educating our children: because we can’t give them all the knowledge they need. It also is important socialization for the kids. If somehow you are smart enough to know everything and how best to teach it, then you are doing a disservice to society by not sharing those talents with society in a job (as a teacher or otherwise).
I’m a single mom of three (no close family) living on a tight budget. I currently have no debt, but I’m having a really hard time finding an option for a home that I can afford. I will have to purchase land and most likely have it plumbed and an electric meter put in, purchase a tiny home or container or metal building, and I need a new car because it’s scary having the kids in a vehicle that’s not dependable. Help!!
here in philippines houses are even smaller than this if not of the same size.. i prefer a house this big than a really huge house.. too high maintenance..you get to spend less time cleaning on a small size house than big house unless if you can afford a househelp who can do all cleaning for you. hehe..you get to spend more time on family if you dont have a big house.
I find ppl complaining dat building home on the land own by der parents..... bt from where i come from ppl don't necessarily buy land becoz dey definitely inherit sum amount of land from der parents or ancestors which is definitely enough for a family.... besides wherever u built ur home ur parents n friends r always der to help u with watever dey can
Great job. I thought I was crazy thinking when I saw commercial for metal office buildings and a this thought came to mind "hmm I wonder if they can it into a home.". Now i know I am not the only one who has had that thought.
My parents raised 4 girls in a 900 sq ft home with 1 bathroom 3 sisters shared a room and the oldest had her own room when she moved out we still stayed in the one room we lived there until we got married
You two our really living the dream and as a 15 year realtor I see it is fast becoming the new way of life!! Declutter and less cleaning lives more fun and real time for your family to actually be a family!! I would love to see you close on the front porch and have some more living space outside!! Thanks for sharing! God Bless
People with the rude comments "that they were given land by the parents", "their sex life", "kids not having their own rooms" blah blah blah. Honestly its their life. My mom would give me some of her land if i asked. People live and learn. They are amazing people i commend them from learning from their mistakes and putting whats best for their children first. Some of y'all talking smack are probably just jealous that they were able to come out of their struggle and u cant give up starbucks or mcdonalds LOL. Also use your imagination. If they are able to change stuff around their home to fit their childrens homeschooling, ages, and lifestyle, im certain they know what to do when the little girl gets older and the children need to get their rooms. Obviously they will keep upgrading as the kids get older. So stop your ignorant hating its ugly. I am inspired by them💕
